Have you ever wondered how Reid State Park came to be? On Tuesday October 17 at 7:00 PM, Georgetown resident Theo Holtwijk will shed a light on that. Theo will give an illustrated talk on the creation of Reid State Park in 1946. His research involved State of Maine documents, newspaper archives, Sagadahoc County Registry of Deeds records, and personal documents of Walter Reid (courtesy of Todd and Karen Barabe - Todd is Walter’s great-great-grandson). The fascinating story of Reid State Park is one of recreation, conservation, land development, philanthropy, and the importance of family and “home.” All are encouraged to attend.

Tide Mills of Georgetown

Visitors and residents of Georgetown who drive through Georgetown Center on Route 127 may be familiar with the remains of a stone structure in the waters of the east branch of Robinhood Cove. These remains belong to one of the eight mills that once operated on the tidal waters of Georgetown Island. During their long history, beginning in the early 18 th century and ending in the 1920s, the mills sawed lumber, made shingles, or ground grain for local use and shipment to markets elsewhere. This exhibit explains how they worked, who operated them, and where their products were shipped. It includes a large number of local artifacts and photos, plus videos and a display that explains how the mills operated. Also on display are a selection of additional artifacts from Saco, Maine and the Tremont Historical Society on Mt. Desert Island, plus a piece of a burr gristmill stone originally from France.  Harry Hopcroft, the curator of our exhibit, is a member of the Tide Mill Institute board of directors and a resident of Brunswick who has spent much time tracking down leads, investigating and photographing tide mill locations, and uncovering historical information about Georgetown’s tide mills. This exhibit runs through September. Enjoy!
