Josiah Spooner Swift, born 1813 in Wareham, Massachusetts, came with his parents to Maine in 1815.  He grew up on Sebascodegan Island in Harpswell, moving to Bath, Maine in 1833 as a newspaper editor.  He lived at various times in Bath, Madrid, Farmington, Portland and Wilton as a newspaper editor, farmer and Baptist minister.  He died in Wilton, Maine in 1883.

He was married to Martha Coney Flint, in 1834, at the Winter Street Church in Bath, Maine.
