Sir William Phips: Born in Pemaquid. Followed the sea, and for obtaining a treasure from the wreck of a Spanish ship in Bahamas, he was knighted by the King. In 1690 commanded the expedition against Port Royal, and as General against Quebec. In 1691 made Assistant, and 1692 appointed Governor under the new Charter. He arrived in Boston May 14, 1692, and bought the charter with him. He was Gov. till 1695, when he lost favor and died in England. Hutchinson 352 etc. see also (MHSP 16:103).
